Sometimes Facebook-owned WhatsApp takes much time in bringing some important features to its messaging app. Take, for instance, the cross-platform transfer of chats is still not available with the app. It is a pain for users who are just switching to a new phone (running an entirely different platform) and want to load their previous chats on their new device.
Currently, WhatsApp keeps your chats as long as the phone number change is performed on the same phone. WhatsApp will seamlessly transfer your previous chats from your old phone number to a new number (considering you have taken a backup of them). WhatsApp will not delete your chats either in case you perform migration on the same number and the same platform.
But what if you are switching to a new number on a different phone? According to a new finding by the sleuths at WABetaInfo, WhatsApp could soon bring the ability to migrate chat to a different phone number as well. The site dedicated to exploring unreleased WhatsApp features has managed to spot the new ability within the latest version of the WhatsApp Beta.
After a thorough inspection, the site was able to see this feature, however, it appears the feature is not fully ready yet. A screenshot shared by the site shows WhatsApp is asking it to move chats to Android with a Start button. But there is one more option provided below to this button – “Transfer to a different phone number?” This clearly reflects WhatsApp’s intent and that is to help you migrate your chats to a new phone number.
The site also found a reference to the iOS-Android migration tool, which means WhatsApp might soon allow the migration of chats if you’re switching to a new device entirely. For comparison, currently, it is not possible to restore your chat history from iCloud on WhatsApp for Android and WhatsApp for iOS can’t restore the backup from Google Driver either.
