Apple Wallet can now store driver's license and unlock your home

08 June 2021 0

Apple has announced new upgrades to its respective OS platforms – iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Apart from the device-specific features, these new upgrades also unlock the new capabilities of some specific apps. For instance, Apple Maps, Messages, Notes, and more have been updated as the new OS upgrades have arrived. There is one more app that has received a significant upgrade.

We are talking about the Apple Wallet that can now be used to store driving license IDs too. Apple Wallet aims at replacing your physical wallets so that you do not have to carry them along or be in continuous fear of losing them. Up until now, Apple Wallet was used for storing credit cards, transit cards, park passes, and almost everything that you would otherwise dump in a physical wallet. Now, the app is receiving one more support.

The driver’s license or state ID support is coming to the Wallet for the users in the US later this year. Apple explains that the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) is working to enable airport security checkpoints as the first place where customers can use their digital Identity Card in Wallet. Apple claims that the Identity Cards stored in Wallets are encrypted and safely stored in the Secure Element, the same hardware that makes Apple Pay private and secure.

Furthermore, Apple Wallet gets support for additional types of keys too. Apple announced that with the iOS 15 it is bringing keys for your everyday places to Wallet, starting with where you live. Additionally, you can also unlock your office, for which you just have to add your corporate badge. The Wallet can also be used to unlock the hotel room. So, in case you’re among those who easily misplace their hotel room keys then this feature will help you a lot. Apple even touts that you will receive your hotel room key even before you arrive at the hotel. Starting this fall, Hyatt hotels will start rolling this feature out to over 1,000 of its properties worldwide.

You just have to store those keys in the Wallet and leave the rest to the iPhone. So, instead of carrying different things, you just have to carry your iPhone whenever you go out and just use the tap to unlock feature.
