Leica, a German manufacturer of cameras that also helps Huawei in co-engineering its smartphones with better cameras has now come up with its own smartphone.
Leitz Phone 1 is Leica’s first self-branded mobile phone, however, it appears a rebadged Sharp Aquos R6, a phone launched last month with Leica’s lens. The main highlight of both the phones is a 1-inch 20MP sensor with an f/1.9 aperture on the back. This is one of the biggest smart camera sensors ever. Also, the front panel of the Leitz Phone 1 looks exactly similar to the Sharp Aquos R6. This means it features a curved display that takes curves along the edges. The two phones, however, differ in terms of the design of the back panel.
The Leica Leitz Phone 1 has a circular camera module fitted on the rear panel. It shares a similar design language with its iconic cameras.
There is also a Leica Red Dot plus a magnet circular lens cap. The Leitz Phone 1 by Leica’s original brand features a matte black gloss cover on the back, instead of the leather back.
The camera app of the phone offers “Leitz Looks” mode for capturing black and white photos.
The technical specifications of the Leica Leitz Phone 1 are exactly the same as the Sharp Aquos R6. There is a 6.6-inch IGZO OLED display with 2,730x1,260 pixels resolution as well as a 240Hz variable refresh rate. On the front, it gets a 12.6MP camera. Under the hood, the Leitz Phone 1 gets Snapdragon 888 processor, 12GB RAM, and 256GB onboard storage, which is twice as much as the Aquos R6. The storage can be expanded even further to 1TB via the microSD card.
The Leica Leitz Phone 1 gets a 5,000mAh battery capacity and is also IP68 rated which makes it dust and water-resistant. It runs Android 11 out-of-the-box and has a monochrome UI customized by Leica itself.
