Instagram is reportedly testing “Link Stickers” that will allow anyone to share links in their Stories. Currently, the users with 10,000 followers or above are allowed to put links in their Stories through the “Swipe Up” action. But, according to TheVerge that has spoken to Vishal Shah, Instagram’s head of product, this might change soon. The ability will allow anyone to add a Link Sticker to their Stories and take their followers to the linked web page.
As per the publication, the test is, however, small and currently, the company is doing a usability study to assess how people might take advantage of links. Shah has reportedly said that during this test, the company will closely watch for the types of links people post. In doing so, it will keep a tab on misinformation and spam.
He further added that stickers in particular fit more into the current way people use the platform, for instance, how we interact with the "Post cards" inside anyone’s Story. We just tap on them and this takes us to the linked Instagram post. But currently, the same isn’t applicable for pages or blog posts residing outside Instagram. Only the verified accounts or people with 10,000 followers are allowed to put external links into their Stories that too through Swipe-up action.
According to Shah, this would eventually change as the eventual goal of the company is to bring link stickers, “whether that would be for everyone or just people who already have linking privileges.” The “Tap to see” feature might replace the long exiting Swipe-up gesture. This is to make everything look more coherent with the existing UI elements of the platform.
Shah also said that the “That is the sort of future system we would like to get to,” he says. “And that’s what we hope to roll out if we’re able to make this work.”
Reportedly, Shah also confirmed that these stickers will be limited to Stories for now and the company has “no plans” to make them available for Posts.
Recently, Twitter for iOS allowed users to share their favorite tweets on their Instagram Stories. But the sad part is, the shared Tweets in the Instagram Stories aren’t tappable, which means users can’t take any action and go to the linked tweet. This is because Instagram doesn’t allow so. We believe with the latest change that Instagram is currently testing, users will be able to put a link sticker while sharing the tweet inside an Instagram Story. This way users will be able to visit the tweet and get more insights just like they would interact with any external link.
