Clubhouse has launched the ability to send direct messages named Backchannels. The feature was under development for quite some time and even got leaked by the company accidentally. It is meant to offer an additional way of interacting with each other to users apart from the standard voice-based conversations.
Backchannels currently support only sending and receiving texts and URLs. The team has not added support for sharing photos, videos, GIFs, etc., but hinted that these might arrive. The messages can be sent for an ongoing room as well as to any user by visiting their profile. A paper plane icon next to the profile needs to be tapped for starting a conversation.

My mic? Flashed
My messaging? Direct.

The same icon can also be seen on the home page's bottom right corner. It will take you to the inbox from where you can browse all conversations. If you have pending message requests, they will also be visible from here. It is similar to Instagram where unless you approve a message request, it will not show up in your primary inbox.
The new messaging functionality on Clubhouse is available for both Android and iOS devices. It is available with the latest update listed on the Google Play Store and App Store respectively.
