Edge 20 series to receive two years of Android OS upgrades, confirms Motorola

30 July 2021 0

Soon after the launch of the much-rumored Edge 20 series, a Motorola representative reportedly mentioned to Android Authority that the new phones will gain only one Android OS upgrade. But the statement later got labeled as inaccurate by another representative.

Now, as per the statement given to the publication by another representative, Motorola hasn’t changed its update policy for the Motorola Edge 20 phones. The series will receive at least two Android OS upgrades and at least two years of bi-monthly security updates. Motorola’s quick response to the inapt information is appreciated. It clarified the air before the misinformation could spread any further. Had it left the matter unattended, it would have gained unwanted lash from the followers.

Reportedly, Motorola also sent the following statement to 9to5Google

Motorola edge 20 pro, edge 20 and edge 20 lite will receive at least 2 major android OS upgrades and 2 years of bi-monthly security updates. These devices are protected by ThinkShield for mobile, which offers additional security protection. Essential features can also be updated via the PlayStore, which allows us to provide key updates more often. Users can expect ongoing support for software features like new My UX experiences, new camera features and new Ready For experiences, dependent on hardware compatibility.

Just for reference, here is what a different Motorola’s representative said earlier –
Each device has its own merit in terms of where it needs to be updated and how many updates it does get. We do commit on the one OS update, and obviously we continue to review that. If we do find that the device has a longer life cycle in the market, we’ll obviously review to see whether it needs more OS upgrades.
Previously, Motorola said the phone models will receive the Android updates depending on how long consumers use them after one major update.

This reminds us of a similar incident that happened recently with Sony. The company later clarified that its flagship phone Xperia 1 III will receive two years of OS upgrades as opposed to what was reported earlier.
