Spotify is testing a new subscription tier that is ad-supported but comes with fewer restrictions. This new tier is called Spotify Plus and is priced at just $0.99 per month. It is aimed at giving users a little more freedom about their ad-supported music listening experience so that it feels more personal and enjoyable.
The biggest benefit of Spotify Plus is that users will get unlimited skips while listening to a playlist. The free version of the app limits users to just six skips per hour which users can exhaust pretty quickly. Another major perk of paying for the new tier is that users will get to choose the songs they want to listen to. Otherwise, users have no choice but to play albums or pre-curated playlists, and that too from 15 selected ones.
The main premium subscription i.e. Spotify Premium costs $9.99 per month which is a lot more expensive than Plus. The new tier could be a great option for those who are okay with ads but do not want all those restrictions. It should be noted that Spotify is currently piloting the new tier. It means not everyone will have access to the tier right away.
It will take some time before Spotify Plus becomes available for everyone. Even if and when it will release publically, there is no surety it will be the same as today. The team will gather feedback and decide what benefits to offer to all the users.
