This week Google surprised us by giving away quite a good preview of its upcoming Pixel phone series. Not only that, but the company also managed to reveal a few tidbits around its first-ever custom-built SoC for Pixel phones. But, other important details like price and availability were kept well under the lid, though Google promised to reveal them once it launches the phones. However, later on, somehow we, at least, got to know that the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro will come to 8 countries.
Anyway, Google was nice enough to comment on the value of the two phones. Well, more or less it said something which was perceived already.
Rick Osterloh, SVP Devices, in an exclusive talk with Spiegel Network World, a German site said the Pixel 6 Pro will be an expensive phone.
Reasserting what Google previously mentioned, Osterloh said,
We will not state prices and the date of the start of sales as well as all functions and technical data until the devices are presented.
However, he added,
The Pixel 6 Pro, which will be expensive, was designed specifically for users who want the latest technology. He even said that the Pixel 6 will fall in the upper segment category to keep up with competing products. Osterloh called Pixel 6 a “mainstream premium product.”
So, Osterloh shared something that was well perceived already, thanks to an early preview that allowed us to peek in and speculate it.
In case you want to know what the upcoming Pixel 6 has in its competition, then we tell you Galaxy S21 and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The topmost model of the Galaxy S21 series that is Galaxy S21 Ultra starts from $1199, while the upcoming iPhone 13 Pro Max is expected to be priced somewhere around the same. We expect the Pixel 6 Pro will be put at a similar price range.
Osterloh said, “we weren't represented in the smartphone flagship segment in the past two years - and not really before that either.”
For comparison, the price of the Pixel 5 was tagged at $700 and if it was not priced as what most flagships do then the Pixel 6 is bound to be pricier, well as per Google.
As per Google, the Tensor chip fulfills most of the AI and ML plans that the company has envisioned so far. So, the phones featuring Google’s ambitious plans will go well above $1000 - $1100.
