OnePlus teases a dual-screen phone | UPD: Turns out a weird ploy

Update: August 12, 2021

Hours before the launch of Samsung's new foldable phones, OnePlus did something for its own amusement. It shared a video clip that showcased something like a dual-screen phone. But it turned out as an unusual ploy.

The new video clip shared on OnePlus US Twitter shows two OnePlus 9 phones standing next to each other, creating a false dual-screen phone look. Then a message appears, "Two is better than one," suggesting an offer on OnePlus 9 phones if you buy them on T-Mobile carrier. So, it's about a carrier deal "get the OnePlus 9 for 50% off," but OnePlus fabricated it quite wrongly.

OnePlus has teased something that you haven’t had heard about before. According to what the company has teased in a video clip on Twitter, it is a dual-display phone that opens just like the Microsoft Surface Duo, but its form factor rather matches Galaxy Z Fold.

What makes this video clip even more interesting is that OnePlus did the unexpected at a time when all of us are waiting for the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 that is just a few hours away. In fact, as per the attached caption with the teaser, OnePlus will share more details today at the same time when Samsung will unveil its new foldable phones. Coincidence? Well, of course not. OnePlus is trying the steal the thunder here, but will it be successful? We believe such teasers can hardly disturb Samsung’s big event and its highly ambitious foldables.

The video clip only shows the device in its opened state, so we can’t tell what resides on the panel when it is closed. It is likely OnePlus will share more details on the same at the mentioned time that is 10 am ET, exactly the same time when Samsung will unveil its Galaxy Z Fold 3 device.

But give a closer look at the teaser and it will suggest you there are two screens attached to the case, just like LG’s G8X. Well, whatever it is, we will get to know about it soon, pretty soon.

So far, so many smartphone manufacturers have worked with the foldable displays and we hear new names that are trying their luck as well. But we haven’t had heard OnePlus' name ever in this segment. In 2019, OnePlus’s CEO Pete Lau commented that the company had no plans of working on one in the near future.

Lau mentioned that the steep pricing of foldable smartphones is the major reason for not launching one just yet. At the time, OnePlus was readying its first 5G phone and reportedly focusing more on its now available smart TVs.
