Samsung unveils Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G with S Pen support

Samsung has officially unveiled its third-gen foldable devices: Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G. The newest launch is proof that the South Korean tech giant is completely committed to the foldable smartphone segment. These are packed with noticeable upgrades over predecessors as well as the competition. The best part is that the pricing is also on the cheaper side as compared to what has been the traditional approach.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G sports a 7.6-inch QXGA+ (2208 x 1768 pixels) main display which is a Dynamic AMOLED 2X “Infinity Flex” panel. It has a 22.5:18 aspect ratio, a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, and a pixel density of 374ppi. The cover display i.e. the one on the outside is a 6.2-inch HD+ (2268 x 832 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.

The foldable has 16mm thickness towards the hinge side and about 14mm thickness on the opposite side (when folded). It weighs 171 grams which makes it lighter than the predecessor Galaxy Z Fold 2.

It is powered by a 5nm octa-core processor clocked at up to 2.84GHz. The phone has a single 12GB RAM available with 256GB and 512GB UFS 3.1 internal storage options. It does have 5G connectivity as well and supports both NSA and SA bands.

In the camera department, the back panel features a triple rear camera setup including a 12.2-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture, a 12-megapixel wide-angle sensor with Dual Pixel AF and f/1.8 aperture, and a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor with up to 2x optical zoom, up to 10x digital zoom, and f/2.4 aperture.


There is a 4-megapixel under-display camera with f/1.8 aperture on the internal display. The cover display has a 10-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The whole package is powered by a 4,400mAh dual battery. It will ship with Android 11 out of the box.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the first foldable from Samsung to support the S Pen stylus. However, it is compatible with two editions of the stylus: S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro. They offer similar features but the major difference is that only the Pro version has Bluetooth connectivity. It further has an LED indicator, pairing and switching, device switching, and USB socket. It is important to note that the Fold Edition will work only with Fold 3.

This new foldable smartphone will be sold in Phantom Black, Phantom Green, and Phantom Silver color options. It has been priced at $1,799.99 with pre-orders already live. It will go on sale starting August 27th in select markets including the United States, South Korea, and Europe.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 sports a 6.7-inch Full HD+ (2640 x 1080 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The cover display on the phone measures 1.9-inches and is an AMOLED panel with 260 x 512 pixels resolution. It measures around 16mm when in the folded state.

Under the hood, it has a 5nm octa-core processor paired with 8GB of RAM. The onboard storage options include 128GB and 256GB. The phone has a dual rear camera setup featuring a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with f/1.8 aperture. The front camera is a 10-megapixel sensor with an f/2.4 aperture.

The battery capacity is 3,300mAh and it will boot Android 11. The foldable has an IPX8 rating for water resistance. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is priced at $999.99 The available color options include Cream, Green, Lavender, Phantom Black, Gray, White, and Pink. The last three colors will be exclusive to Samsung’s online store.
