iPhone 13 Face ID may support face masks, foggy glasses

26 August 2021 0

Apple is reportedly working on a new Face ID prototype for the iPhone 13 lineup. This new offering will be a lot more useful and powerful than the current one. It is said to be capable of supporting face masks and foggy glasses. The report is coming from Front Page Tech citing sources familiar with the development plans.

The new tech is being tested in the form of an iPhone 12 case. This prototype case basically adds the new Face ID tech on top of the existing Face ID on the iPhone. When using, it then makes the device use the new prototype for facial recognition purposes instead of the one that comes loaded by default. The camera sensor on the new tech is on the left side as compared to being on the right side in the currently publically available Face ID.

The good thing is that Apple is said to be internally testing the new tech at a relatively large scale. It means the company is quite serious about implementing the tech on future iPhone models. All selected employees have been asked to register their faces with the new Face ID prototype. The whole setup process is the same as we get to see on all iPhones. Once they have set it up, they are asked to try to unlock the iPhone while wearing a face mask or foggy glasses.

The testing is further said to be happening at a comprehensive level. Apple is looking at different lighting scenarios, both outside and inside, as well as various mask and glasses shapes and sizes. It should be noted that while the current-generation Face ID can unlock iPhone without requiring the user to remove the mask, it relies on a paired Apple Watch to do so. The next-gen offering will be able to do the same without the need for the smartwatch.
