Instagram Search is set to undergo major changes to make it easier for users to find relevant content. It will give more importance to photos and videos related to the search term. In its current state, Search mainly focuses on showing related accounts, hashtags, and places. The team says that the implementation is underway and will expand to everyone in a gradual manner.
The official blog post from the company has talked about how exactly Instagram Search works. It says that the Search considers your typed query to look for relevant accounts and hashtags. It gives a high preference to those accounts and hashtags that already have the particular word in their names that you typed in.
As it is visible in the screenshot above, Instagram does not show relevant photos and videos straightaway. The user has to tap on a particular account or hashtag to see the content. The post further reveals that in addition to the search query, it considers the user's activity and popularity of search results to offer suggestions.
With the proposed change, Instagram Search will start showing photos and videos like a complete search page. It will now have more emphasis on the visual appearance of results. These media results will appear within the "Top" category and if you are still interested in checking out accounts and hashtags, you will be able to do so through respective categories.
