Netflix India now allows subscribers to choose UPI AutoPay as a payment method. The support has been rolled out after a long time since NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) launched the AutoPay feature of UPI. This feature deducts payment automatically from the users’ UPI account, just like any credit and debit card payment method.
Before the introduction of the UPI AutoPay, it wasn’t possible to make payments using UPI as the Netflix service requires recurring payment methods and UPI couldn’t satiate alone as it is a one-time payment method. NPCI announced the UPI AutoPay last year (went live with Gaana service first) and since then it was assumed that Netflix India would adopt this change immediately. But, Netflix India took a long time to integrate this new payment method into its service.
Recurring transactions meaning you will not have to worry about manually making the payment every month. So, once you set this up, you do not have to enter the UPI PIN every month.
It is believed that Netflix might be getting ahead of the curve as India’s central bank the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to impose new rules on recurring transactions from October 1.
If you are already subscribed and want to switch to the UPI AutoPay payment method, just head over to the Account section >> Billing Details, to switch to UPI AutoPay and add the necessary UPI ID. Currently, Netflix India accepts @upi and @paytm IDs. So, once you set this method, the subscription amount will be deducted automatically every month without having you enter UPI PIN.
It is worth bearing in mind that before the UPI AutoPay, Netflix India subscribers had to depend solely on credit and debit cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Diners Club. The only alternative method to subscribe to Netflix was via a partner, including the likes of Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone India.
Netflix India’s payment head Gunjan Pradhan has reportedly shared the following statement on the same –
Our goal is to give members more freedom and control over their Netflix experience — to watch their favourite stories whenever they want, all without ads,” Netflix India's payments head Gunjan Pradhan said in a prepared statement. “We hope that adding UPI AutoPay to our existing payment options — credit and debit cards, as well as integrations with Airtel, Vi and Jio — will give our members even more flexibility.
