Like many other instant messaging apps, WhatsApp offers a feature that lets others see the last time a particular person was online. It is meant to help them get an idea of whether they should be expecting that person to be online in the near future. However, not everyone is okay with sharing their last seen status which is the reason the app allows hiding it as well.
WhatsApp currently offers three "Last Seen" privacy control settings. A user can choose to share his last seen with everyone, only with those who are saved as contacts, or no one at all. The team is now working on adding a new privacy control that will offer a little more flexibility. It is beta testing a new option named "My Contacts Except..." on WhatsApp iOS.
The new option is beneficial for circumstances where you want to keep your last seen hidden only from select contacts. This is certainly better than choosing to share it either with all or none of the contacts. It should be noted that whoever contacts that you will add to this option, you will not be able to see their last seen status as well.
Even though the feature is currently under testing only on WhatsApp for iOS, it will undoubtedly be expanded to Android devices as well. It is unknown when it will expand beta testing to Android or release it publically for everyone but it should take some time. We will keep you posted on all the developments.
