Apple has officially introduced iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini smartphones at its California Streaming virtual event. These two are direct successors to last year's iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini respectively. The major difference between the two generations is in the camera performance. Other differences are not as big as one would expect after seeing the model number bump.
The iPhone 13 comes with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with 2532 x 1170 pixels resolution. The display size is 5.4-inches with 2340 x 1080 pixels on Mini. The panel is brighter than predecessors with 800 nits of typical peak brightness and 1200 nits of peak brightness for HDR. There is Ceramic Shield on the front, aluminum frames, and glass on the back panel. The notch is also smaller this time around and takes 20% smaller space.
In the camera department, Apple has used the same camera sensor and technologies that it debuted with the iPhone 12 Pro Max last year. There is still a 12-megapixel dual-camera setup but the placement of sensors has been changed and is now aligned diagonally. The wide-angle sensor offers an f/1.6 aperture and the Ultra-wide sensor offers an f/2.4 aperture. It is a 47% bigger sensor which results in more light capturing and thus improved low-light performance. As for the front camera, it is a 12-megapixel sensor with an f/2.2 aperture.
There is a new Cinematic mode that will allow users to shoot videos with a cinematic feel. It focuses on capturing the depth of field effect while focusing on a subject and as you move, it will automatically shift the focus. While the iPhone 13 is capable of doing it in real-time, focus can be adjusted even after the video has been captured. And yes, these videos will be captured in Dolby Vision HDR by default.
Under the hood, the new iPhone 13 models are powered by the 5nm hexa-core A15 Bionic chipset. It is claimed to deliver 50% better CPU performance and 30% faster GPU performance as compared to the "competition". Apple is further promising better battery life on the newer models. It says the iPhone 13 will last 150 minutes longer than the last generation and the iPhone 13 Mini will last 90 minutes longer. There is an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance and both phones will ship with iOS 15.
