Apple cuts iPad production to boost iPhone 13 shipments | Report

02 November 2021 0

It is not hidden from anyone that Apple is also struggling with the same chip and component supply shortage issues as almost every other OEM out there. We first reported about it last month when Cupertino-based tech giant was said to be considering cutting down on iPhone production. A new report from Nikkei Asia has revealed that Apple seems to have figured out a workaround to continue with original shipment targets.

The report claims that Apple has decided to sacrifice iPad production so that it can prioritize the iPhone supply chain. It cites two different anonymous sources to add that iPhone 13 will get more of the component allocation. The iPad production cut down is a significant one as figures are now said to be 50% lower in the last couple of months. This is in comparison to the production goal Apple set originally.

Both iPhone and iPad models share a lot of components including core as well as peripheral chips. This allows Apple to trim the productions of one product to boost or maintain the production of the other. As for why it is prioritizing iPhone, it is said to be due to heavy demand prediction for the iPhone 13 lineup in the western markets. We also know that iPhone has been the source of a huge chunk of the company's overall revenue.

As one would expect, Apple has not commented on the developments which is what it usually does. One way to know if the report is correct is to have a look at delivery timelines for both iPhone and iPad. The latest development should result in iPad availability and deliveries getting stretched but the exact opposite should happen with iPhones.
