Google's Pixel fold to have same camera setup as Pixel 5 | Report

05 November 2021 0

Google is long rumored to be working on a foldable smartphone, presumably called Pixel Fold. We keep coming across new reports and leaks once in a while that claim to reveal one thing or another about the device. The latest bit of information is coming from 9to5Google folks who have shared some details about the camera.

The report reveals that the alleged Pixel fold will not have the same high-end camera sensors and features as the recently released Pixel 6 series. It is in fact tipped to have the same camera sensor and performance as the Pixel 5. This is based on the files spotted by the team during an APK teardown of the Google Camera app's latest build.

It discovered that the Pixel fold, codenamed "Pipit", will make use of the 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor that Google first started using with the Pixel 3. There is also expected to be a secondary Sony IMX386 wide-angle sensor. It is important to note that Google was previously rumored to have codenamed the device as "Passport" but seems like it has changed the name since.

The phone is further expected to have two 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 front cameras, one for the outer display and another for the inner one. As for the launch, Pixel fold is now expected to release early next year. This is because that is the time when Google is planning to debut Android 12L, a tweaked Android 12 for larger display devices including foldables.
