Huawei has taken wraps off the P50 Pocket as its first clamshell flip foldable smartphone. It is a compact-sized foldable aimed at buyers who are not interested in a tablet-like experience offered by the company's Mate X lineup. This new model is also meant to be Huawei's answer to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, a foldable that has proved to be very popular among foldable fans.
As the name suggests, the Huawei P50 Pocket is foldable that one can easily carry around in a pocket. It folds and unfolds like a clamshell phone. Its external appearance follows the same design language that we saw with the Huawei P50 series. There are two big circles on the outside, one for housing the triple camera setup and another for external display.
The display on the outside is a 1.04-inch OLED panel with 340 x 340 pixels resolution. It has a 60Hz refresh rate and 120Hz touch sampling rate. It can be used for checking time, date, and notifications but there is also support for a bunch of apps and widgets. This allows the outer display to show relevant details related to various tasks like navigation, music playback controls, weather, QR codes, and camera viewfinder for clicking selfies using rear cameras.
When flipped open, the P50 Pocket features a 6.9-inch Full HD+ (2790 x 1188 pixels) OLED foldable display. It is capable of offering up to 120Hz refresh rate, 300Hz touch sampling rate, and supporting DCI-P3 color gamut. It also has a centered punch-hole that houses a 10.7-megapixel front camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The phone has a proprietary foldable that leads to no gaps when the device is folded.
It is a premium flagship device and comes loaded with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. There are two configuration variants featuring 8GB of RAM with 256GB storage and 12GB of RAM with 512GB storage. The triple rear camera setup includes a 40-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a 13-megapixel ultrawide-angle sensor with f/2.2 aperture, and a 32-megapixel ultra spectrum sensor with f/1.8 aperture for boosting color rendering.
The whole package is supported by a 4,000mAh battery with support for 44W fast charging. The foldable will boot HarmonyOS 2.0 out of the box. Other features include a USB Type-C port, Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi 6, side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and stereo speakers. The available color options include Black, White, and Gold. The foldable is already up for pre-orders in China and while a global release is planned, there is no launch timeline for that yet.
