iPhone without SIM card slot may arrive as early as Sept 2022

28 December 2021 0

Apple is rumored to be considering ditching physical SIM card slots on iPhone models. The original but sketchy rumor claimed the timeline for this to happen to be around 2023 and with the iPhone 15 launch. Now, a fresh report has emerged from MacRumors that reveals that an eSIM-only iPhone may arrive as early as September 2022.

The report cites an anonymous tipster who shared a legit-looking document with the publication. The document showed a timeline for the move but did not specifically mention Apple or iPhone. The source further told that Apple has already told major U.S. carriers to prepare for selling iPhone models without a SIM card slot.

The complete transition will take place at a gradual phase. It is said the U.S. carriers will start off by selling select iPhone 13 models without a nano-SIM card in the box from Q2 2022. Apple already does that for every iPhone 13 model sold through its official website or physical Apple Store.

It should be noted that Apple also offers eSIM support on iPhone models in various regions as part of offering dual-SIM support. This allows users to make use of a physical SIM and an eSIM. It further offers Apple Watch and iPad models with eSIM confirming its keen interest in the technology. Its ultimate goal is to release an iPhone that looks like a single slab of glass.
