iOS 15.4 beta adds unlock Face ID with mask without Apple Watch

28 January 2022 0

Apple has released iOS 15.4 developer beta with a feature that will make using Face ID in current times a lot more convenient. The team is testing a new feature where Face ID can be used with a mask on. This functionality is available on iPhones since last year but it requires Apple Watch to work. The new feature has been improved and works independently.

The new feature will surely benefit a large number of users as not all iPhone users have an Apple Watch. It is an opt-in feature, at least for the time being, which means you need to enable it manually. It is available as a toggle within Face ID & Passcode settings that needs to be turned on. The toggled is labeled Use Face ID with a Mask as you can see in screenshots below.

The feature will ensure that when you are out wearing a mask and need to unlock your iPhone, you do not have to either pull down the mask or enter your passcode. It is said to work by recognizing the unique feature around the eyes and using that for authentication purposes. However, Apple recommends that Face ID should be used with full facial recognition features as it is more accurate that way.

Apple further notes that Face ID with a mask will not work with glasses. It has further been limited to iPhone 12 or newer models which means if you have an older generation model, the new feature will not be available to you.
