Meta expands 3D avatars to Instagram, adds new features to Facebook Messenger

01 February 2022 0

Meta, formerly Facebook, has officially expanded 3D avatars support to Instagram DMs and Stories. These avatars were first announced in 2019 and were limited to Facebook and Messenger which are now receiving updated avatars. The expansion is part of the company's ambitions related to the metaverse.

The updated version of 3D avatars comes with Cochlear implants and over-the-ear hearing aids. These are available in a number of color options so that users can personalize them. These will be available across all Meta platforms including VR space i.e. Oculus Quest products. The team has also made slight changes to certain facial shapes and skin shaders to make avatars look more authentic and closer to the real you.

3D avatars support in Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram is currently available for users from the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This is in addition to the countries where these have been rolled out already. These avatars can be used in Facebook profile pictures, comments, stickers, and stories among others.

Lastly, Facebook has teamed up with NFL to offer users to show support for their favorite NFL teams. This has been done ahead of the Super Bowl LVI scheduled for February 13th. These limited-time virtual NFL merchandise will be available until February 28th i.e. by the end of this month.
