Google releases Android 13 developer preview 1

11 February 2022 0

Google has released Android 13 Developer Preview 1 for eligible Pixel devices. The dessert codename for the new Android version is Tiramisu as first reported last year. The new version is focused on privacy, security, and developer productivity. It has a number of new features and changes but the majority of them are not live yet.

Android 13 will bring a new system photo picker for securely sharing local and cloud-based photos. It will be the standard way of sharing photos regardless of the app you are using. This is similar to how Android's document picker works and will allow apps to view only particular media files instead of all of them. The good thing is that this new media file picker will also make its way to devices running at least Android 11 through Google Play system updates.

Photo picker provides a consistent, secure way for users to give apps access to specific photos and videos.

Google is making it easier for developers to make users aware of their apps' tiles that can be added to Quick Settings. There is a new tile placement API that will allow devs to show a prompt within the app using which users can add the tile to Quick Settings with just one tap. The team has expanded Material You-themed app icons to all apps where developers will only need to provide compatible app icons. There is support for per-app language so that multilingual people can set app languages as per their preferences.

While Android 13 Developer Preview 1 can be installed by anyone with an eligible device, we would suggest you do not install it if you are a general user. You should wait for public beta releases that are scheduled to begin in April 2022. It will continue for at least the next couple of months as Google is hoping to reach Platform Stability in June 2022. There is no specific timeline for the Android 13 stable release but we can expect it to be around August-September.
