Netflix wants you to pay extra for account sharing outside household

17 March 2022 1

Netflix account sharing has become so common that the company has started to see its effects on subscriber growth. This is the reason it has been looking for ways to combat the same. The latest attempt from the streaming giant to keep its crown is to allow users to share their accounts by paying a discounted price per user.

The new feature is part of a testing phase that will go live in Costa Rica, Chile, and Peru in the coming weeks. All Standard and Premium plan users will have a chance to add sub-accounts for up to two people who do not live under the same roof. These added accounts will be different from user profiles that are already available on the app. The major difference is that those people will get to have their own login ID and password.

The charges for adding a new user are 2,380 CLP in Chile, $2.99 in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru. This is discounted pricing as compared to what Netflix charges for plans otherwise. The team is further adding another feature that will allow users to transfer their user profile data to a new account. They will be able to move their viewing history, My List, and personalized recommendations to either a new account or an Extra Member sub-account.

The second feature is to ensure that if someone is looking to get his/her own account, they do not worry have to worry about losing all their data and starting fresh. It should be noted we might see changes to account sharing plan prices by the time Netflix is ready to roll them out to everyone.

Chengyi Long, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix said,

"We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans. While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households - impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members."
