Instagram's much-awaited parental controls for supervising teens are finally rolling out in the United States. These controls were first announced in December 2021 and have now been made available. The idea behind the move is to make Instagram a safe and secure place for teenagers while also keeping parents in the loop.
Parents and guardians will be able to check the amount of time their teens are spending on Instagram. They will also be able to set time limits on the usage. They will receive alerts whenever their teens will report someone on the app. They will get access to reports about the accounts their teens are following as well as their followers.
As of now, only teens can initiate parental supervision through the Instagram app on their devices. The team says parents will get an option to request supervision on their teen's accounts starting June 2022. They will be able to do so using the mobile app as well as the desktop version. It should be noted that teens will need to approve supervision requests though.
These are said to be the first set of parental supervision tools and more such tools will be added in the future. Instagram says it is working on letting parents set usage hours for their teens. It will also add an option for allowing more than one parent to supervise their teens. The features are currently available only in the United States but there are plans for global expansion.
