The ability to edit a tweet is something Twitter users have been asking for a long time and every time, the company has maintained that it has no plans to offer it. The main concern for the company has been the potential of the feature getting misused. It is possible that someone may change the tweet once it gets substantial engagement. However, it seems to have figured something out as the development of the edit tweet feature has officially been confirmed.
Twitter first tweeted "We are working on an edit button" on April 1st and to no one's surprise, everyone took it as one of the corporate pranks for April Fool's Day. It was followed by a tweet from Elon Musk where he asked his followers to vote in a poll about whether they wanted the edit option. It is important to note that Musk is now the largest shareholder in Twitter as he recently bought about 10% of the shares. His tweet was quoted by Parag Aggarwal, CEO of Twitter, where he urged users to vote carefully as the "consequences of this poll will be very important".
This led to speculations that Twitter is working on the edit button but many were still considering it to be a prank of some sort. But now, Twitter has confirmed that it is no joke. It revealed that the edit tweet button is under development for the past year or so. It will be released initially as part of Twitter Blue testing in the coming months. It is hoping to collect feedback on how the feature works, what does not work, and what is possible.
As we said in the beginning, Twitter wants to reduce the possibility of the feature getting misused to as low as possible. It will explore different ways to achieve that and only then it will be released for everyone.
