Android 13 public beta 1 is here for Pixel devices

27 April 2022 0

Google has released the first Android 13 public beta for eligible Pixel models. The next major Android version went under beta testing in February but that was a developer preview aimed at developers. The latest build is meant for the general public who are interested in trying out a new Android version ahead of its actual release.

Android 13 beta 1 is still in the under-development phase which means it can have bugs and performance issues. However, it should be a lot more stable in comparison to developer preview builds. It is packed with previously reported features like new notification permission, photo picker, themed app icons, improved localization, and language support. There are three new features and one of them is specifically aimed at end-users.

The team has added more granular permissions for media file access. It will allow users to choose what particular type of files should be shared with an app. In current Android versions, an app gets access to all types of files once it gets the user's permission for file sharing. Android 13 will let users provide individual permissions for accessing images and photos, videos, and audio files.

The new permissions are READ_MEDIA_IMAGE, READ_MEDIA_VIDEO, and READ_MEDIA_AUDIO. Google says it will offer a single dialog box if an app requests permissions for both image and video files. It has further added better error reporting for apps that generate keys, Keystore, and KeyMint. This will make it easier to understand the reasons behind key generation failures.

Lastly, Android 13 will bring anticipatory audio routing for media apps. It will help them identify how their audio will be routed. This will eventually help developers in determining the best audio format for playing their audio tracks.
