Samsung has officially announced UFS 4.0 as the latest storage solution version. It is a direct successor to UFS 3.1 which is currently used in almost all the major high-end devices. The new version comes with a number of significant upgrades that should improve the overall performance by many folds in future devices.
UFS 4.0 is claimed to offer a speed of up to 23.2Gbps per lane, twice that of UFS 3.1 which is now the predecessor. Samsung says boosted bandwidth is specifically beneficial due to the acceptance of the 5G network. Such devices will require a huge amount of data processing and the future use cases will be related to augmented and virtual realities (AR and VR).
The latest version is said to deliver sequential read and write speeds up to 4,200MB/s and 2,800MB/s respectively. These are another significant upgrade over UFS 3.1 speeds. It is further said to bring noteworthy power efficiency which is 46% better as compared to the previous version. The sequential read speed is touted to be 6.0MB/s per mA.
Its dimensions will be 11mm x 13mm x 1mm at the maximum available size. This is said to result in better space utilization and design convenience. UFS 4.0 will be available in different storage capacities going all the way up to 1TB. The mass production will begin during the third quarter of this year. The commercial availability is expected to happen with the likes of Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 4, and Galaxy S23 series.
