Sony has debuted WH-1000XM5 as its newest premium ANC-enabled headphones in the widely acclaimed 1000X series. These are direct successors to the WH-1000XM4 released in 2020. The company has gone for a new design with the new version and has improved in all aspects that make the 1000X series such a success.
The WH-1000XM5 features eight microphones which are controlled by two processors. This results in improved active noise cancellation, especially in the mid-high frequency range. There is Auto NC Optimizer that is said to automatically optimize ANC depending on the environment. Sony's HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 now has Integrated Processor V1 that "unlocks the full potential".
The new headphones now feature 30mm drivers as compared to 40mm on the previous generation. The team has also made improvements to bass reproduction on the headphones. The new design is completely different from the previous generation which is something you will notice right away. It has a new soft fit leather with a step-less slider that should result in a comfortable listening experience.
The headphone features support for both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. It is compatible with Google's Fast Pair and Microsoft's Swift Pair for fast pairing with Android and Windows devices respectively. The company is claiming an impressive battery life of 30 hours and it can give 3 hours' worth of charge within 3 minutes via USB Power Delivery.
Sony has priced the WH-1000XM5 at $399 which makes it $50 more expensive than the previous generation. The color options are Black and Silver. The company says it will continue selling the WX-1000XM4 alongside the latest model.
