YouTube Shorts were released about two years ago as a TikTok competitor. While these have not reached anywhere close to TikTok's dominance yet, it is safe to say the move has not been a failure either. The team has added various features to Shorts in the past and today, it has announced one more for creators.
The new YouTube Shorts feature is called Green Screen. It will allow creators to use another YouTube video or Shorts as background for their own Shorts. The clips made using the feature can be up to 60 seconds long. It is important to note that only eligible videos and Shorts can be used as a green screen for your original content.
It is up to the creator whether they want to make the video with or without audio. The latter will require them to mute the audio as it is done for clips without the green screen effect. The feature can be used by selecting Create > Green Screen under the YouTube video that you are watching. If you are watching a Short, tap the three-dot icon and then choose Green Screen from the list of options.
YouTube says all Green Screen videos will have attribution to the video or clip used as the background. This will allow those video creators to discover a new audience. If you do not want others to use your video or clip as Green Screen, you can opt-out of it by visiting YouTube Studio. The new feature is currently limited to iOS but will make its way to Android in the near future.
