Qualcomm debuts Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processors

23 May 2022 0

Qualcomm has debuted two new chipsets Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. As the name suggests, the first one is a flagship processor and the second one is meant for upper mid-range devices. Both these offerings are claimed to deliver superior performance and power efficiency in their respective segments.

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

The new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is simply an upgraded version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from last year. It is claimed to offer 10% faster CPU and GPU performance as compared to the previous version. It will consume 15% less power for about 1 hour of extra gameplay or 50 minutes of social media browsing. It will have a maximum clock speed of up to 3.2GHz.

Qualcomm is touting an overall 30% power efficiency with the new chipset. In fact, AI Engine will also deliver a 20% better performance per Watt ratio. The processor is still based on a 4nm manufacturing process but is manufactured by TSMC instead of Samsung. All in all, it is claimed to let you do more with the same level of the battery as compared to the previous gen processor.

It is a 5G capable chipset and sticks with the Snapdragon X65 5G modem. Qualcomm says the new chipset will be seen in smartphones released by Asus ROG, Black Shark, Honor, Iqoo, Lenovo, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, OSOM, Realme, Red Magic, Redmi, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is a mid-range processor with a focus on delivering superior gaming performance. This is the reason it comes loaded with features like Snapdragon Elite Gaming and Adreno Frame Motion Engine. It is the first Snapdragon 700-series chipset launch since switching to the "Snapdragon X Gen X" nomenclature scheme.

It is an octa-core chipset with a peak clock speed of 2.4GHz. There is said to be a 30% machine learning improvement and a 20% GPU performance increment as compared to Snapdragon 778G. It is capable of supporting Quad HD+ panels at 60Hz refresh rate or Full HD+ panels with up to 144Hz refresh rate. The camera sensor support is up to 200-megapixels through a 14-bit ISP. It can connect to 5G networks and offers all other modern connectivity options.

Xiaomi, Oppo, and Honor are the only three brands now that have confirmed devices featuring the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. The commercial availability is expected during Q2 2022 and we can expect more OEMs to make announcements by that time.
