Murena One is a privacy-focused Android phone with no Google apps, services

01 June 2022 0

In the past, we have seen various companies try their hand and fail at offering a privacy-focused product/service free which is also from Google's interference. Murena is one such company doing so for the last few years through its forked Android version /e/OS. It has now taken the next step in the direction as it has taken wraps off its first-ever smartphone Murena One.

The Murena One is a phone claimed to be focused on privacy and free from Google. It does not have any of the Google apps and services that we see on the majority of contemporary Android devices. It means there is no Google Play Store, Google Search, Google Maps, payment services, and more. This approach led Murena to come up with its own alternatives to those necessary apps and services.

It is the reason the phone is packed with the company's own messaging, maps, camera, and browser apps which are all said to be open-source. It has a store called App Lounge from which users can download most Android apps with ease. Each app listing features Murena's privacy rating (out of 10) based on the amount of personal data collected. It further offers 1GB of free storage to its private cloud service for storing data and files.

If we talk about /e/OS, it is essentially a forked version of LineageOS which itself is an Android fork. It is based on Android 10 which is quite outdated considering the latest version is Android 12 and Google has already begun beta testing Android 13. It comes with privacy features where users can use a native VPN, hide their IP addresses, and block app trackers.

/e/OS is officially described as,

"/e/OS is at the core of our privacy by design ecosystem. We have removed many pieces of code that send your personal data to remote servers without your consent. We don’t scan your data in your phone or in your cloud space, and we don’t track your location a hundred times a day or collect what you’re doing with your apps."
