Xiaomi has confirmed that its upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra will feature a 1-inch camera sensor. It has been developed by the company in collaboration with Sony and is called IMX989. It will be the first 1-inch camera sensor for smartphones as all previous offerings have been cropped versions of Sony's digital camera sensors.
Sony's IMX989 is said to be a 50-megapixel sensor in resolution. Along with Leica's tune-up, it is claimed to set a new standard in smartphone photography. It is further said to offer 172% greater photosensitive area, 76% greater photosensitive capacity, 32.5% increase in camera speed, and 11% increase in startup speed as compared to iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The camera sensor will make its commercial debut with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. It will become available for other OEMs later and we will get to see it in more smartphones. As for the Xiaomi 12S, it is said to arrive with the Sony IMX707 camera sensor. It will have 48% more photosensitive areas and 49% more greater light input as compared to IMX766.
The Xiaomi12S series is set to launch on July 4th at an event in China. It will have three models named Xiaomi 12S, Xiaomi 12S Pro, and Xiaomi 12S Ultra. The Ultra model will be the most expensive in the lineup. It is tipped to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. There will be up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of onboard storage.
