Snapchat has officially announced its paid subscription tier called Snapchat Plus aka Snapchat+. It was under beta testing for the last few weeks and is now ready for a stable release. The rollout is limited to select countries around the world but will eventually be made available globally.
The announcement blog post does not reveal much about what to expect from the subscription. It simply says Snapchat Plus is a collection of exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features. Some of the noteworthy features include exclusive app icons, checking who rewatched your story, and pinning one of your friends as BFF to the top of your chats.
It is reported that all features that rely on interaction from other users will eventually be expanded to all users. Only individual features will remain exclusive to Snapchat Plus subscribers. The membership is priced at $3.99 per month but if you are hoping that this will make ads go away as well, you are set to be disappointed. Snapchat has confirmed that ads are here to stay as "ads are going to be at the core of our business model for the long term.”
Snapchat Plus is currently available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. It will expand to other regions around the world but there is no specific timeline yet.
