UPDATE (July 6th, 2022):

On its official TikTok account, Nothing has confirmed that the Nothing Phone 1 will have a 120Hz display. It posted a clip on the platform showing the smartphone's display settings. It has an option called Smooth Display which can be enabled or disabled as per the user's preference or need. When enabled, it will automatically adjust the display refresh rate between 60Hz and 120Hz depending on the content shown.

We are about two weeks away from the Nothing Phone 1 launch event but to keep the hype on, Nothing is busy releasing bits and pieces of details every other day. It has already revealed the Glyph Interface, a feature unique to the smartphone which utilizes LED strips on the back panel for different functions. And now, we have official words on the choice of processor.

In an exclusive interview with Input, Nothing's founder Carl Pei has confirmed that Nothing Phone 1 will be powered by Qualcomm's custom-tuned Snapdragon 778G+ processor. It is exactly identical to the Snapdragon 778G except for the addition of wireless charging and reverse wireless charging support. Both these features have been added to the chipset specifically for Nothing.

Many tech enthusiasts and fans were expecting the Nothing Phone 1 to be a flagship device. It is now set to be a mid-range offering but Pei has shared reasons for choosing the chipset. The Snapdragon 778G+ was chosen after considering performance, power consumption, and cost. He further believes that "phones have reached a point of good enough performance for general tasks and more powerful chips have diminishing returns".

The Snapdragon 778G+ is an octa-core chip featuring four ARM Cortex-A78 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. These are performance and efficiency cores respectively. There is Adreno 642L GPU for handling graphics-intensive tasks and an X53 5G modem for supporting 5G connectivity. It is built on TSMC's 6nm manufacturing process and is claimed to be better at thermals and power savings than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.

While the lack of a flagship chip may feel disappointing, it's the actual world usage that matters. If Nothing is able to deliver a good software experience with good optimization, not many will actually miss a flagship chip inside the phone. The Nothing Phone 1 will launch on July 12th and will initially be sold via invite-only approach.
