OnePlus is reportedly considering spinning off Nord as an independent sub-brand. The report is coming from The Mobile Indian citing its sources familiar with the matter. The approach is similar to what Xiaomi did with Redmi and Poco, Vivo with iQOO, and Huawei with Honor before being forced to sell it off.
Nord smartphones are currently released and sold through OnePlus channels but after the change, it will have its own team and stores along with branding. However, we may still see phrases like "from OnePlus" or "a OnePlus brand" in some places which will help customers get familiar with the stand-alone brand. It is said to use light blue as the theme color for branding purposes.
There are plans for releasing phones that cost as high as INR 35,000 (budget flagships) and as low as INR 15,000. Nord smartphones will also have their own software interface based on OxygenOS. The team will focus a lot on the offline presence of the brand. It will come up with exclusive Nord stores as well as partnering with third-party stores.
The most interesting bit of information is that Nord will stay limited to releasing smartphones. The brand will expand and venture into various categories like smart TVs, smartwatches, fitness tracks, TWS earbuds, Bluetooth neckbands, power banks, and other accessories. It is also expected to compete with OnePlus in various categories excluding smartphones and smart TVs.
There is no doubt that as per this report, OnePlus has some ambitious plans for the spin-off Nord independent brand. It is yet to make any official statement or announcement about the development. This is the reason we will suggest you take this with a pinch of salt for the time being.
