Meta Quest VR headsets will not require Facebook account from August

08 July 2022 1

Meta has announced Facebook log-in will not be required for Quest VR headsets moving forward. The change will come into effect starting August of this year. It will roll out a new Meta account structure that will eliminate the need for users to have a Facebook account to use the VR product and services.

It is referring to these accounts as Meta accounts where each user will have a Meta Horizon profile. Each new user will be asked to create an account and set up a profile before they start their Quest VR journey. All existing users will have until January 2023 to migrate to these new Meta accounts. Once they do so, it will be up to them if they wish to keep their Facebook account linked to the service.

A Meta account will allow users to log into VR devices and manage all their VR app purchases with ease. As for Meta Horizon profiles, these are essentially Oculus avatars for exploring different VR experiences. It includes a username and an avatar among other details which can be customized as per the user's preference.

All of the "Friends" on Meta VR circle will now be known as "Followers" which is similar to how it works on Instagram. Any new person will have to follow you to see what you share and if you have a private account, they will have to request permission before they can follow you. There are three privacy options for shared content: Open to Everyone, Family and Friends, and Solo. All these changes will come into effect from August 2022.
