Netflix testing adding a new home option to tackle password sharing

19 July 2022 3

Netflix has been exploring ways to tackle password sharing for quite some time now. It recently announced testing where users from select countries were allowed extra users under their existing plans. It has now begun a new test where it is asking users to pay extra if they wish to use the account on a TV or TV-connected device outside the primary residence.

The test will reportedly kick off in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras next month. Netflix will charge 219 pesos (about $1.17) per month for each additional house in Argentina. The cost will be $2.99 for every other region included in the test. It is important to note that final pricing may change if the company decides to expand the feature to everyone around the world.

It is said that users from these regions will have a primary home where they will be able to use Netflix on any of the devices or even travel without any extra steps. The extra fee will come into the picture if they wish to use the streaming service on a TV outside their main home for more than two weeks. It means there will not be any fee if you are using it on a new TV for just a couple of weeks. Also, this condition applies only for first-time usage of that TV.

Basic plan users will be allowed to add only one extra home. The limit will increase to two homes for Standard users and up to three for Premium users. As for how Netflix will determine whether a place is a new home, It says it looks for different aspects like IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity.

Users from these testing regions will see a new Home setting within account settings. It will allow them to see how many homes are added to their account along with details like location and devices. They will be able to remove any home whenever they want from any device. As we said in the beginning that Netflix is exploring different ways, and this makes it hard to say if it will be expanded to everyone worldwide.
