TikTok working on a music streaming service to take on Spotify

01 August 2022 3

After dominating the short-video space, TikTok seems to be setting its eyes on the music streaming market. It has reportedly filed a trademark application for a music streaming application. The report is coming from Business Insider as they spotted the application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The name of the app is TikTok Music which is self-explanatory. The application describes the streaming app as meant to be for smartphones and tablets. It will allow users "to purchase, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics, quotes, create, recommend, share his/her playlists, lyrics, quotes, take, edit and upload photographs as the cover of playlists, comment on music, songs, and albums."

The important thing to note here is that the TikTok Music app also has social media elements. This is what differentiates it from all other leading music streaming apps like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. The ability to comment on songs and live stream audio/video is currently missing from other options. Such features could help the company attract new users.

However, this is not ByteDance's first attempt at releasing music streaming app. It already has an app called Resso which is available in Brazil, India, and Indonesia. The app has many of the features including social elements that we talked about just above. TikTok's app in Brazil even has an option that redirects users to the Resso app for listening to the complete track.

It is quite possible we might see TikTok follow the same approach as and when TikTok Music will launch. It could help it attract a huge number of users to the music streaming app without spending a lot on marketing. Resso currently has users reaching the 100 million mark with constant significant growth. We can expect similar growth rates for the TikTok Music app as well.
