Huawei has unveiled HarmonyOS 3 as the newest iteration of its smartphone operating system. It is a major upgrade over HarmonyOS 2.0 which arrived last year. There are numerous changes and upgrades in the new version but the company has primarily focused on device connectivity, privacy, and personalization aspects.
The biggest change coming with HarmonyOS 3 is how smooth and fast it has become to connect with multiple devices and multi-task across them. The whole process is now as easy as a simple drag and drop. It expands beyond the usual devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops, and monitors to include 12 different types of smart devices like printers and smart glasses. It will show all your connected devices as individual bubbles which can be dragged to pair with each other.
When you will combine two or more smart home devices, it will be referred to as a super device. The best part is that your devices do not even need to be on the same internet connection to work together. They will simply be able to "sense" each other when in close proximity. All you need to do is to place them close to each other and that's it.
The new OS version comes with a dedicated privacy dashboard. It will show you detailed logs about how often a particular app has accessed your device's location, microphone, camera, files, or contacts. While the system is capable of revoking permissions from apps showing suspicious behavior, you can also do so manually. It has a feature where you can give fake permissions to untrusted apps and the system will open an empty gallery or empty contacts lists for them whenever asked.
There are plenty of new widget options for those who are into personalization. There are a number of widget styles to choose from so that they go with your preference. You can even customize their colors and shapes along with adding stickers and texts to make them truly unique. It is also possible to stack widgets one over another where they will automatically adjust the size to fit.
In terms of performance, Huawei is claiming up to 7% faster app launch speeds with the new version. There will be up to 14% better app action responsiveness and up to 18% smoother sliding animations. The battery efficiency during graphics rendering will be 11% better than the previous generation. HarmonyOS 3 is said to begin rolling out in September but an official list of eligible devices is yet to be made public.
