In the last couple of years, Spotify has been clear about becoming the all-in-one destination for all types of listening needs. This is the reason it expanded beyond music streaming and added support for podcasts and live audio sessions. It is now taking one more step in the direction with the announcement of audiobook support.
Spotify says audiobooks are now available for US-based users. It has been one of the most commonly requested features from users. There are over 300,000 titles to choose from that users will be able to purchase and listen to. The prices of these audiobooks will be set by publishers which means Spotify will have no say in prices.
All audiobooks will come with a sample as it happens on other audiobook platforms. These samples will give users a chance to listen to and decide whether they want to make the purchase. All purchases will take place outside the application. This is probably to avoid the cut needed to be paid to Apple and Google for in-app purchases.
Once an audiobook is purchased, it can be downloaded for offline listening. Spotify has added an auto-bookmarking feature which will save the place they will pause the playback. It will help users resume the audiobook with just one tap. There are also features for playback speed controls and ratings. Each audiobook will show an aggregated rating to help other listeners.
