Google Stadia cloud gaming service is shutting down

30 September 2022 1

Google has confirmed it is shutting down its cloud gaming service Stadia. The announcement reveals all players will continue to have access to their library until January 18th, 2023. It was launched in 2019 and less than three years later, Google has taken the decision that many were speculating about since day one of the release.

Phill Harrison, Vice President and General Manager for Stadia, has said the service failed to get the traction from users that they hoped for. This is the reason the decision to pull the plug has been taken. However, the good news for players is that all their hardware, games, and DLC purchases (except Stadia Pro memberships) made via Google Store will be refunded. It will be an automatic process and the company is hoping to complete the majority of refunds by mid-January.

Stadia is said to have been built on a strong technology foundation. The company has plans to apply these technologies to other products and services like Google Play, YouTube, and augmented reality. It will also allow other companies to utilize them for their respective projects. As for the team members, Google says many of them will be moved to other parts of the company.

Stadia was a cloud gaming streaming service that allowed anyone to play games including AAA titles on any device and from anywhere. It worked with laptops, smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. A user only needed to choose the game and start streaming it via Google's servers. It eliminated the need for spending money on buying expensive gaming laptops/PCs or even a console.

If you are a fan of cloud gaming services, Stadia's demise is not the end of the road for you. There are other options like NVIDIA's GeForce Now and Xbox's Cloud Gaming. Logitech also launched a cloud gaming-powered handheld gaming device called Logitech G Cloud Gaming Handheld very recently.
