YouTube has announced unique handles for channels that will make it easier for creators to connect with their audience. These handles will be similar to how other social media platforms offer usernames. These handles will allow people to easily search for channels and even mention them in the comments or video titles.
These handles will be visible on both channel pages and Shorts. It will instantly help viewers know the name of the creator behind the video or Short they are watching. Those viewers will also be able to use handles for mentioning creators in comments. Even creators can use handles to mention other creators in the video titles, descriptions, comments, and community posts.
Each handle will be unique to a particular channel. It means while multiple channels can have the same name, they will not have the same handle. YouTube has not made channel handles available yet but will be doing so in the coming days. It will notify creators whenever the handle will become available for them. The notification will arrive based on a number of factors, including overall YouTube presence, subscriber count, and whether the channel is active or inactive.
The announcement says channel names will automatically become the account handles for the majority of the creators. However, each creator will have an option to change the handle name if they wish to. It can be done via YouTube Studio once a creator has received the notification. Once the handle is selected, YouTube will create a unique channel URL i.e. youtube.com/@handle. For channels with existing personalized URLs, they will automatically redirect to the handle-based URL.
