Google announces 'world’s first laptops built for cloud gaming'

12 October 2022 1

Chromebooks are considered has handy devices for education and productivity purposes, especially considering their asking prices. The one thing they are not rated good for is gaming which is exactly what Google is hoping to change with its latest announcement. It has debuted three new laptops touted as the "world’s first laptops built for cloud gaming" just a few days after shutting down Stadia.

Lenovo, Asus, and Acer are the three OEMs that have collaborated with Google for these new cloud gaming-tuned Chromebook devices. It should be noted that none of these notebooks come with a discrete GPU which is crucial for any laptop to be called a gaming laptop. However, they do have a few features and specs that may technically justify the "gaming" tag.

These notebooks offer a minimum of 120Hz refresh rate display panel. There is anti-ghosting capability, WiFi 6/6E for faster internet connectivity, and select models even have RGB keyboards. Google says all models have been tested by the GameBench platform for consistent performance for 120 frames per second and input latency of under 85ms.

The team has added support for NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Microsoft's Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Amazon Luna cloud gaming streaming services. The GeForce NOW app will come pre-installed on these Chromebooks. Each buyer will get three months of free access to its RTX 3080 tier and Amazon Luna+. Users will be able to search for available games via the Everything button on Chromebook.

Google is further working with gaming accessories makers like Acer, Corsair, HyperX, Lenovo, and SteelSeries. It will release peripherals like headsets, mice, controllers, and keyboards under the Works with Chromebook program. These products will be tested and verified for the program but the exact criteria have not been revealed.
