Google confirms Tensor G2 is a 5nm chip, not 4nm

12 October 2022 2

Google recently debuted the Pixel 7 series i.e. Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro around the world. Both these smartphones are powered by a custom Tensor G2 chipset which was widely reported to be a 4nm processor. The claim has now been debunked by Google itself which has confirmed that it is actually a 5nm processor.

The official confirmation was given by a Google spokesperson to Android Authority. The claims of the Tensor G2 chip built on a 4nm process surfaced due to some pre-release benchmarks and rumors. Another thing was that Google did not specify the manufacturing process used for the processor during the Pixel 7 series launch keynote. This led to many publications and reports claiming the 4nm process part.

Here is the official statement:

"We purpose-built Google Tensor G2 for real-world use cases. Our final architecture, which includes 5nm, helped us reach that goal while increasing both performance and power efficiency. This approach also allowed us to add new capabilities while taking a step forward on machine learning with our next generation TPU with G2."

There has been speculation that Samsung is the primary partner of Google for producing the Tensor G2 chip. The South Korean tech giant has two 5nm nodes i.e. 5LPE and 5LPP. It used the former one for the original Tensor but as for the second iteration, it is unknown which node was used.

The Tensor G2 features dual Cortex-X1 cores, dual Cortex-A78 cores, and four Cortex-A58 cores. There is a Mali-G710 MC10 GPU for taking care of graphics-intensive tasks. It was said to deliver about 60% faster performance while being 20% more power efficient at the same time.
