After a long wait, Netflix's ad-supported subscription tier is finally official. It is called Basic with Ads as it is essentially the Basic tier with ads and a few other changes. The plan will become available starting next month in 12 countries around the world. It is cheaper than other subscription tiers and gives users an option of enjoying Netflix's content at affordable rates. This new plan will not affect existing plans in any way.
The Basic with Ads tier is priced at $6.99 per month in the United States which makes it one of the cheapest ad-supported tiers in the country. Users will get access to all of Netflix's catalog except for a few titles missing due to licensing restrictions. The company says it is working on fixing the issue. The video resolution will be limited to 720p/HD which is the same as the Basic tier.
The biggest change to the tier is the addition of ads. Netflix says there will be 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour and each ad will be either 15 or 30 seconds long. These ads will appear before and during a show/movie you are watching. You can not download shows and movies for offline viewing in this tier. It makes sense as the whole purpose of the tier is to show you ads.
Once the tier becomes available next month, new subscribers will be able to choose the plan right after a successful registration. Existing users will also be able to change their plan to Basic with Ads anytime they want. It will be accessible from November 1st in Canada and from November 3rd in the United States and the United Kingdom. The plan will also release in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Spain.
