Meta has begun a new ad campaign where it wants users to move away from the Green bubble-Blue bubble debate and pick WhatsApp instead. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, shared a photo of an ad banner running at Pennsylvania Station in New York City on Instagram. He further captioned the post to explain why WhatsApp is better than iMessage.
The ad shows a Green bubble and a Blue bubble along with a third bubble referred to as a Private Bubble. It goes without saying that this new bubble is from WhatsApp. It goes on to say, "Protect your personal messages across devices with end-to-end encryption" and "Always message privately". The caption from Zuckerberg mentions WhatsApp's encryption works across Android and iOS, including group chats.
He goes on to talk about how users can send disappearing messages with just one tap. He wraps by mentioning the addition of end-to-end encrypted backups and none of these features are available on iMessage. It should be noted the iMessage offers encryption but it works only if everyone part of the conversation is using an Apple device. The encryption does not work when Apple falls back to traditional SMS messages.
This is not the first time Apple is being targeted by a rival in an ad campaign. Just last month, Google kicked off a campaign to pressure the Cupertino-based tech giant into adopting RCS. It talked about how Apple's decision to not adopt RCS is ruining the messaging experience between iOS and Android users. The users have to face blurry videos, broken group chats, missing read receipts and typing indicators, no texting over Wi-Fi, and more.
Apple has maintained its stance and does not seem to be interested in adopting RCS anytime soon. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has even urged people to get an iPhone instead. If we talk about Meta, it seems it will also want Apple to keep resisting RCS as this will provide it with a better opportunity to attract users to WhatsApp.
