When Elon Musk took over as Twitter's new owner last week, he started off by getting rid of a few of the top executives including the CEO and CFO. The reports suggested it was just the beginning as the billionaire was looking to cut the workforce in half. Those reports have turned out to be true as Twitter has begun mass layoffs this Friday.
Twitter employees are said to have received an internal memo yesterday that talked about layoffs that will get underway the next morning. It mentioned all employees will receive an email with the subject line "Your Role at Twitter" by 9 AM PT on Friday. It will be sent to employees at their work email addresses if they are not part of the layoff and it will be sent to their personal email addresses if they have been laid off.
The memo describes the situation as:
"In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday. We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward."
It further mentioned that all Twitter offices and badge access have been suspended for the time being. This is said to have been done to ensure the safety of employees as well as Twitter systems and customer data. It advised anyone who was in the office or on the way to the office to return home.
As of writing this, a number of Twitter employees have shared on the platform that they have been laid off. They have tweeted about losing access to their work email addresses and other tools like Slack. The company's total workforce was around 7,500 and Musk is reported to be targeting cutting around 3,700 jobs.
Looks like I’m unemployed y’all. Just got remotely logged out of my work laptop and removed from Slack. #OneTeam forever. Loved you all so much.— Simon Balmain (@SBkcrn) November 4, 2022
