WhatsApp has started beta testing companion mode on Android devices including both smartphones and tablets. It is meant to allow users to keep using their accounts on devices other than the main one. It means once you have a WhatsApp account activated on one device, you can now use it on some other smartphone or tablet as well.
Companion mode is available with WhatsApp beta 184.108.40.206 which is the newest Android beta version. However, it is not available for every beta tester out there. Only a few have received it which have been selected at random. The only way to check if you are one of the lucky ones is to launch the WhatsApp registration screen and see if there is Link a device option.
If the option is there and you tap it, WhatsApp will present you with a QR code. This is the code that you need to scan using the primary device that has the account enabled. Simply visit app settings and choose Linked Devices followed by Link a Device. This will open a QR code scanner from where you can scan the code.
Once the process is completed successfully, all your chats will sync with the new device so that you can resume from where you left off. WhatsApp has currently set a limit of linking up to four devices with the same account. It is unknown whether the limit will be increased by the time stable rollout takes place.
