When we think about foldable smartphones, they are mostly inward folding as it is a safer approach for the bigger foldable display panel. In fact, Huawei is the only globally established OEM that makes inward folding phones i.e. Mate X series. Xiaomi is another OEM that considered the idea of releasing such a foldable. It filed a patent application and worked on prototypes but did not release anything commercially.
But thanks to tipster Kuba Wojciechowski (@Za_Raczke), we now have an idea of what a Xiaomi inward folding phone would have looked like. He has tweeted a few images showing the prototype phone. The phone has a line separating the camera module area from the rest of the back panel. It appears to have a minimum of four camera sensors along with an LED flash. These sensors are arranged in descending order of their size.
The phone is said to have been powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 processor. It would have had the X50 modem for providing 5G connectivity. The tipster adds that the foldable was a super secretive project and only very few units made their way to the public. It is not surprising considering none of these details leaked during the time it was under development.
Unfortunately, the leak does not mention why did Xiaomi decide to scrap the project altogether. The company released Mi Mix Fold and Mix Fold 2 foldable smartphones but both have an inward folding mechanism. It is quite possible that durability may have been one of the reasons for not releasing it commercially but looks like we will never know.
