When Carl Pei's Nothing launched its first smartphone Nothing Phone 1, it was released in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The phone did not make its way to the United States and Canada but is now set to change. Pei has told CNBC that the team is working with U.S. carriers to ensure that the U.S. launch takes place as soon as possible.

Pei revealed Nothing Phone 1 could not make it to the U.S. market at the time of the launch as it requires additional technical support and to be compatible with unique customizations over the Android skin. The team is now working with U.S. carriers to make the device support all these carrier-specific requirements before the launch.

Here is what Pei exactly said,

“The reason why we didn’t launch in the U.S. is because you need a lot of additional technical support, to support all the carriers and their unique customizations that they need to make on top of Android. We felt that we weren’t ready before. Now we are in discussions with some carriers in the U.S. to potentially launch a future product there."

There is no specific timeline on when we can expect the Nothing Phone 1 to launch in the U.S. It is a mid-range Android smartphone and will be released as an iPhone competitor in the United States. Pei further talked about goals to become profitable sometime in 2024.

In a separate tweet, Pei confirmed the company has no plans for releasing Nothing Phone 2 anytime soon. He says the company is focused on doing a few things instead of a "dozen of products" every year. In terms of smartphones, it is focusing solely on Nothing Phone 1 where the next step is to release the Android 13 upgrade.

Phone (2) isn't launching anytime soon. We're focused on doing a few things well, and won't churn out dozens of products a year like many others.

Phone (1) is our main focus. We're cooking something really great in terms of software, Android 13 and beyond.
